On October 7th, the NBA preseason continued with a clash between the Miami Heat and the Milwaukee Bucks. The game saw an intense back-and-forth in the opening quarter, with the Bucks gradually pulling ahead in the final two minutes. In the second quarter, Milwaukee kept up their momentum, launching a scoring spree, but with just a few minutes remaining, the Heat responded with a 16-5 run to regain control. New Heat addition Powell delivered an outstanding performance, putting up 18 points in the first half. In the second half, the Heat came out strong, hitting three consecutive three-pointers to take the lead. The game remained close with alternating leads until the final moments, when the Bucks closed out with a 7-0 run to secure a 103-93 victory.

However, despite their win, a major concern emerged for the Bucks: their star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, did not play in the game. According to reports from The Athletic’s Eric Nehm, Giannis contracted COVID-19 and missed the Bucks' training camp. It has been confirmed that he will miss the entire preseason to fully recover in time for the season opener against the Washington Wizards.

After the game, Giannis spoke about his health status, stating, “Obviously, I think it has affected my body. I’m not feeling 100% yet, but I’ll take it day by day. I can do some 5-on-0 drills, running around. Tomorrow should be better. There are 18 days until the first game, so I think I’ll be okay.”

While preseason games serve as a time for teams to test new strategies and players, the regular season is where real competition begins. With only two weeks left before the season opener, the Bucks need Giannis to be fully recovered if they are to be serious contenders in the East. Unfortunately, even if Giannis returns to full health, the Bucks may still lack the championship-caliber talent and depth to pose a significant threat to the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

This offseason, the Bucks added players such as Turner, Kevin Porter Jr., Coffey, and Cole Anthony, but like in previous seasons, they still lack a reliable second star beyond Giannis. Despite Giannis averaging 30 points per game in each of the last three seasons, the Bucks have failed to advance past the first round in each of those years. He also became the second player in history to average 30 points per game for three consecutive seasons without winning a playoff series.

Much of the Bucks' offseason was clouded by uncertainty, as rumors about Giannis’ desire to play for a championship-contending team sparked speculation about potential trades. Though Giannis ultimately chose to stay in Milwaukee, his future with the team remains uncertain. If the Bucks fail to meet expectations this season, it’s likely that Giannis will leave the team.
